GUNN IMS (Intramuscular Stimulation)

Effective, proven treatment for reducing chronic pain conditions

People who suffer from chronic pain become frustrated and depressed when their doctors cannot help. Some try medications, therapies, even surgery, and do not find lasting relief. It is now understood that chronic pain can occur, even when there is no injury or inflammation. Gunn IMS is a scientifically proven method for diagnosing and treating a variety of chronic pain conditions.

Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS) is an effective treatment for chronic pain of neuropathic origin. IMS was developed by Dr. Chan Gunn while he was a clinic physician at the Worker’s Compensation Board of British Colombia in the 70’s. He is presently President of ISTOP and clinical professor at the University of Washington’s Multi Disciplinary Pain Center in Seattle.

Acupuncture

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is the practice of piercing the body with thin, sterile needles at specific acupuncture sites throughout the body. This is a therapeutic method used by specially trained physiotherapists to encourage natural healing, reduce or relieve pain and improve function of affected areas of the body. It involves the insertion of very fine needles through the skin and tissues at specific points on the body.

There is no injection of any substance and the treatment itself causes minimal discomfort. Dry needling treatments may cause more discomfort if tight muscles are being released or if a muscle is being stimulated to increase strength. The soreness is temporary and improved muscle flexibility and strength is realized quickly.

Does it work?

Modern/Medical approaches to acupuncture recognize that needles inserted at acupuncture points induce endorphin-medicated blockage of pain pathways within the body. It is effective for treating many conditions including  - Headaches and Whiplash symptoms  - Joint and muscle pain (i.e. tendonitis)  - Arthritic inflammatory conditions - Low back pain and sciatica.
